Sunday Worship, The Gift of Holy Moments

Prelude—CMCL Jazz Musicians

Lighting the Peace Lamp—

As Gunilla Norris has written:

…love nourishes us. When it is in our lives, we can bear pain, confusion and even death. In this way, the food of the spirit – love – is linked with the food of the body – bread. Both are staples. They sustain us.

Gunilla Norris, Becoming Bread (Hidden Spring, 2003), p. xii (adapted)

We gather together before God this morning for worship as part of this community. Meeting God. Meeting one another. We know that these are the essentials that sustain us and give us peace.

Welcome/Call to Worship— Welcome to Church on the Farm! For those of you who have started attending more recently, it is a beloved CMCL tradition to worship here on a Sunday in August. After not being able to gather last summer, it is especially sweet to be able to be together again here this year! We are also glad to be with those joining the service by Zoom! A heartfelt thanks to all who helped make our gathering possible today. This morning we continue with our Sacred Summer series as we celebrate God’s gift of Holy Moments. With gratitude, we acknowledge the holy mystery of connecting with each other and the Divine – for our good and the good of the world.

Gunilla Norris writes about a midrash that tells us that:

“when the world was created God made everything a little bit incomplete. Rather than making bread grow right out of the earth, God made wheat grow so that we might bake it into bread. In this way we could become partners in completing the work of creation.”

Rituals of recognition. Repetition. Reverence. Receiving. These are ways we grow to know that we ourselves are integral parts of the whole. We, too, are manna.”

–Gunilla Norris, Becoming Bread, p. 29-30 (adapted)

With wonder at God’s loving work in and with us, today we pause to mark three holy moments in the lives of individuals and this congregation. Four people will be baptized. Five more will be joining CMCL by transfer of membership. And we will also be honoring nine senior youth who graduated this year.

Thanks be to God!

Offering/Prayer—Thank you for your continued support of your congregation. Our budget supports our staff, our building, our congregational care, and our outreach commitments. We are grateful that this community can be a place to seek and give mutual aid and to reach out beyond our community, too. Thanks so much for being the church and giving to the work of the church.

Generous God,
  you gave us life;
now we give our lives back to you.
We present ourselves:
  our work and play,
  our joys and sorrows,
  our thoughts and deeds,
  our gifts and resources,
  to be used by you
for the sake of all people everywhere,
    through Jesus Christ.
